Mammography in Dapto
Bulk Billing Available
Mammography is a low-dose X-ray of the breast used to detect early signs of breast cancer and investigate breast symptoms. At i3 Radiology in Dapto, we offer both screening and diagnostic mammography, with all images reviewed by our specialist radiologist and results sent directly to your referring doctor.
Early detection saves lives. If your GP or specialist has referred you for a mammogram, our experienced team will guide you through the process with care and professionalism.

FAQs
Do I need a referral for a mammogram at i3 Radiology?
Yes — a referral from your GP, specialist, or surgeon is required for a mammogram at i3 Radiology. If you are looking for a free screening mammogram without a referral, the BreastScreen Australia program offers free two-yearly mammograms for women aged 40 and over at dedicated screening centres.
Is mammography bulk billed?
Medicare rebates are available for mammograms performed with a valid referral from your GP or specialist. Please contact our team to discuss your specific situation and any out-of-pocket costs that may apply.
How do I prepare for my mammogram?
No fasting is required. On the day of your appointment, avoid applying deodorant, antiperspirant, powder, or lotion to your underarms or breasts, as these can appear on the images and interfere with the results. Wear comfortable two-piece clothing so you can easily undress from the waist up. If you have had previous breast imaging at another provider, please let us know when booking so we can arrange to have your prior images available for comparison.
Is a mammogram safe?
Yes. Mammography uses a very low dose of radiation, and the benefit of early cancer detection significantly outweighs the minimal radiation risk. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, please inform our team before your appointment.
Will it hurt?
Most patients find the compression briefly uncomfortable rather than painful. The compression lasts only 10 to 20 seconds per image. If you experience significant discomfort, let your mammographer know — they can adjust the technique to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
I have breast implants — can I still have a mammogram?
Yes, women with breast implants can have mammograms. Please let us know when booking so we can schedule a longer appointment and ensure our team is prepared to image around your implants safely and effectively.
What if my mammogram shows something unusual?
If the radiologist identifies something that requires further assessment, your referring doctor will discuss the findings with you and may recommend additional imaging such as an ultrasound, or in some cases a needle biopsy. An unusual finding does not necessarily mean cancer — many findings on mammography are benign.
